Finally a bit of sun!

There were actually shadows on the buildings outside our windows yesterday, a bright cold sun managed to find it´s way above the horizon in the morning. What a relief after all the gray weather we´ve had lately.

I´m trying to limit my choice of colours working on these views, I think it´s a good practice not to use all fourteen or fifteen or whatever it is I have in my usual palette. You can see the colors I used in this painting sticking up at the bottom of the paper - the rest didn´t fit into the scanner...

20,5 x 20,5 cm, pencil and watercolours on Arches 300 gsm watercolour paper, fine grain. Colours used were W&N lemon yellow, winsor red, cobalt blue, and Rowney burnt sienna.

Yes, a limited palette gives discipline and pleasure. A fine concept is so often spoiled by giving in to the abundance of pigments in the box. Nice job!

Beautiful painting! I'm always jealous of artists that can make watercolors behave so well. :)

Great painting. Love the limited colors you used. As Lin would say, BRAVO!

Nice work, Nina. Beautiful shadows. I have found, too, that a primary triad yields some lovely browns and grays. Deft drawing, as usual. I always find roof angles challenging.

As the screen came up, I said to myself 'limited palette' and I was right. It gives a great look. Far more interesting than if you used many colours.

Beautiful, Nina, and so very, very, very, very inspiring to someone who knows very little of watercolour except that it is a much greater challenge than folk like you make it appear with your expertise.

These various views out your windows are-by now-familiar territory, and yet each new piece reveals a fresh depth in the range of your talents: drawing, composition, recognition of the effects of light, and those sumptuous color choices.

i can relate to the feeling of seeing the sun after many gray days in a row! your painting is terrific and i love your limited color palette. i don't know if you are a Flickr user, but even if you're not you should check out our Urban Sketches group ( http://www.flickr.com/groups/urbansketches/ ). your painting is a perfect fit for it and it would be a great contribution to the pool
